TIMELINE

A total of 10,160 tonnes of kentledge was required to sink into position the 78 monoliths, each 4.46 metres square and 30.48 metres high, that make up this 1,164m quay wall. More than eight hectares of land were reclaimed as a result of the Southampton Docks extension. It was here that the company then constructed the Solent Mills for J Rank Ltd, extending them 16 years later in 1950.
