Mersey Tunnel

The company completed the Birkenhead section of the tunnel in 1934. The section consisted of a 13.41m wide tunnel with an 884m long open approach. The company’s involvement in tunnels has continued to this day with major tunnels for roads, railways, water treatment, public utilities and power station supplies. The company developed and built tunnel boring machines and carried out prototype trials in chalk in anticipation of the Channel Tunnel.
