Mulberry Harbours

Perhaps the most important and dramatic contribution to the war effort by the company was the construction of caissons for the famous harbours that supported the D-Day landings in Normandy. Of the 80 largest caissons, code-named ‘Phoenix’, 10 were constructed by the company. Shortly after D-Day the 6,000 tonne concrete caissons were towed across The Channel and sunk into position to form the three temporary ‘harbours’ used to supply the invasion force.
