Spencer Steelworks, Llanwern
Constructed on a marshy site 5.6km long by 2km wide, this steelworks was then the largest civil engineering contract ever let in the UK. Work began in 1960. This project was one of many major steelworks undertaken by the company from Ebbw Vale in 1936 to Rotherham in 1962 and the Anchor Works at Scunthorpe in 1970.
