The dock, designed to handle the largest ships afloat at the time, is 305m long, 34m wide with a depth of water of 14m. The company has since built many of the other major docks and wharfage facilities along the Thames and in subsequent years has completed similar undertakings on the Clyde, the Tyne, the Tees and the Wear.
