Windscale AGR Decommissioning
As part of the decommissioning of this prototype nuclear reactor the four heat exchangers, each weighing 175 tonnes, were lifted vertically from their shielded enclosures in the Reactor Building. They were then transported by road to the Drigg disposal site. The company was contracted for all the preparatory work to enable lifting using a 1,200 tonne truck-mounted crane connected by a friction grip lifting band fitted at the top end of the heat exchanger.
