Our sponsored students took on a challenge they’ll never forget when they were thrown in at the deep end on this year’s annual team-building event.
‘XPO8 The Cruel Sea’ involved a day of activities with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth on July 31st.
Following a comprehensive safety briefing, the 33 students were put through a series of challenges designed to demonstrate the importance of teamworking and leadership.
The day included a sea survival drill on Horsea Lake and a visit to the Royal Navy Leadership Academy at HMS Collingwood where the participants tackled a series of timed Practical Leadership Tests.
Their final stop was the Damage Repair Instruction Unit at HMS Excellence.
Used by all ranks to test their skills at carrying out repairs in the event of an attack at sea, the unit is designed to accurately replicate the superstructure of a naval vessel and can simulate the pitching and rolling of a ship at sea.
Having been extensively briefed on how to plug holes in a sinking ship situation, the students’ task, once on board, was to search for damage and use the equipment provided to stem the flow of the gallons of water programmed to flood into their compartments.
This task provided a memorable finale to a hugely enjoyable event.
