After completing a year-long research project on ‘Valuing Natural Capital in the Construction Industry’ as part of the CIOB Sustainability Scholarship programme, Szilvia Zakar presented her findings at The Building Centre in London on June 8th.

Szilvia’s presentation sparked a lively debate among the audience of invited guests from across the industry.

Natural capital accounting uses the language of finance to place a monetary value on natural resources. By increasing companies’ understanding of the risk and opportunities associated with their relationship with ‘natural capital’, this allows them to better manage these interactions and integrate their impact into their business strategies.

Szilvia’s research focused on how natural capital accounting has been deployed so far by industry and explored the extent to which it could be useful in tackling the specific environmental challenges of the construction sector. She rounded this off with a set of recommendations to ease the adoption of natural capital accounting by the industry.
