Familiar to Harry Potter fans the world over, Glenfinnan Viaduct has been wowing visitors since it was completed in 1898.
Glenfinnan Viaduct forms part of the Mallaig extension of the West Highland Railway which was constructed between 1897 and 1901.
Built entirely of concrete, the viaduct consists of 21 arches, each spanning 15m and has a maximum height of 30m offering spectacular views down Lochaber’s Loch Shiel.
The viaduct has played a starring role in many films and has featured in three Harry Potter movies.
The numerous railway bridges and viaducts that punctuate the Mallaig extension were constructed in concrete; the first time the material had been used on this scale for such purposes. The 40m clear span Borrodale Bridge was the longest concrete span bridge that had been built to date.
