Standing close to London Bridge, the 10-storey Riverbank House provides 29,000m2 of high quality office space in the capital’s busy financial district.
Sensor controlled revolving glass doors lead into a large double-height reception area with eight passenger lifts providing access to the floors above. Two vehicle lifts service a basement car park.
To avoid any disturbance to the offices below, a multi-layered system incorporating vibration-reducing rubber blocks was constructed to support four 67 tonne roof-top generators.
The building’s 4.5m deep basement was built inside the existing structure, with a system of raking props used to optimise construction. A waterproof membrane installed between the old and new basement walls and under the slab ensures it is completely watertight.
Project sequence animations derived from the Building Information Model (BIM) were used to demonstrate to Building Control the damper activities in the event of a fire in the boiler room.
The building incorporates motorised blinds within its curtain walling, sedum roof and intelligent lighting throughout. Twenty four photovoltaic panels form part of the south elevation glass screen.
The building is designed to maintain sight lines to St Paul’s and to ensure roof-top plant is not visible from the viewing balcony of nearby City tourist attraction The Monument.
Our site team received a Highly Commended Gold Award from the City of London Considerate Contractor Scheme 2010. The second successive Gold awarded to the project under the scheme, the judges praised the way access to the restricted site was managed to minimise disruption and ensure the maximum safety of the public.
The steps taken to reduce the environmental impact of construction also saw the project awarded the scheme’s Environment Award in 2009.
