We led the development of the highly complex cladding for the tilting glass planes that form the building’s envelope.

Our Design Group worked with the development’s structural designers on an alternative to the proposed secant wall for the basement, installation of which may have encountered difficulties due to the number of services around site. A less invasive solution using sheet piling and a raft foundation was developed which had the added advantage of being quicker and quieter to install.

Almost all of the demolition waste is being recycled as is the excavated sand and gravel.

A solar thermal system previously used on a number of other projects helps heat the water for the welfare facilities.

To promote the highest standards of health and safety on site and encourage open communication all operatives take part in a worker engagement workshop.

A classroom has been set up on site as part of the National Skills Academy to provide further training opportunities to those employed on the project. This will also incorporate the Westminster Work Scheme to provide education and employment opportunities for the long-term unemployed. We will work with our supply chain to provide candidates for the schemes and long-term employment through our clients’ projects.

As an early signatory to the Victoria Employment Charter we are also working with Land Securities to provide training and work opportunities for the medium-term unemployed.

Located in an area in which client Land Securities has a number of ongoing projects, effective neighbourhood liaison is a key consideration. Our team comprises core members from the Watermark Place commercial development which won a Gold Award from the City of London Considerate Contractor Scheme.

The transparency that resulted from Building Information Modelling ultimately led to a more collaborative design process, resulting in more efficient and higher quality solutions.

62 Buckingham Gate is one of a series of prestigious contracts for Land Securities. Previous projects include the redevelopment of Birmingham’s Bullring, New Street Square, Cardinal Place and 30 Gresham Street in London, and The Gate leisure and retail development in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The project won Silver at the 2013 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards.
