We provided the technical expertise to help realise this memorial to some of the often overlooked victims of war.
The Animals In War Memorial on London’s Park Lane pays tribute to the millions of animals that have served and died alongside British and Allied soldiers.
Designed by sculptor David Backhouse, the memorial features a hand-carved Portland Stone wall symbolising the arena of war. Life size bronze statues of two heavily-laden mules, a horse and a dog together weigh over two tonnes.
We provided the structural design for the memorial and managed the project for the trustees.
In addition to advising on structural elements of the monument we designed the concrete foundation that supports its curved and inclined wall.
3D modelling of the foundation highlighted anomalies between the various elements of the memorial and provided setting out information for its complex shape.
Part of the project committee, we managed the scheme on behalf of the trustees, working closely with the sculptor, architect and carvers.
