Integrated teamwork was key to the successful delivery of the stadium early and under budget.
The centrepiece of the world’s greatest sporting extravaganza, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics in 2012 as well as athletics and field events.
Constructed on a 40 acre site to the southern side of the Olympic Park in Stratford, the 80,000-seat venue was designed to be converted into a 25,000-seat venue after the Games.
The main accommodation for athletes, venue management, VIPs and media is provided in the west stand of the stadium.
While a comparable project would typically take around 18 months to progress from end concept to start of construction, at the stadium this was achieved in just six months.
The project team’s alternative proposal for a lightweight cable net roof was the most sustainable option and used half as much steel as a standard cantilever design.
A dedicated Safety Leadership Team comprising representatives from the various project partners worked to eliminate worker injury. Extensive workforce engagement and increased training ensured full buy-in to the project’s safety culture and values, neatly summed up in the site maxim of Be Safe Home Safe. The project went on to be completed with an exemplary safety record.
The stadium’s compact design minimised the materials required in its construction. The venue contains around 10,000 tonnes of steel and is the lightest Olympic Stadium to date.
An on-site education facility delivered qualifications in literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as NVQs at Levels 2 and 3.
The project team raised £20,000 for the Time to Shine programme which provides regular community-based sports activities for young disabled people living in the five host boroughs of the Games.

The project team won the Commitment to Exemplar Performance Award at the inaugural ODA Safety and Environment Awards, and received the ODA and CLM’s Safety, Health & Environment Leadership Team’s Lessons Learnt Award for the establishment of a dedicated Working at Height Rescue and Evacuation Team.
Further honours include Gold Awards at the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards in 2012 and 2011, with the stadium named runner-up for the top award of Most Considerate Site in 2012.
The stadium was also the first in the UK to receive Secured by Design certification for the measures taken to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
