The radical redevelopment of Newcastle’s Eldon Square is reinventing this North East shrine to retail.
Delivered in three phases, the redevelopment of Eldon Square improves and extends the landmark centre to a total of 120,000m2.
Following reconfiguration and extension works and the delivery of a new bus interchange, the final element of the project involved the redevelopment of the site’s Southern Gateway.
Anchored by a four-storey department store and with room for more than 20 large stores along a wide two-storey mall, this phase of works also delivers street level shops and restaurants.
To accommodate the retention of a magnificent Georgian façade, an economic temporary works scheme was developed by our design group to support and brace the mall’s existing floors while a new steel frame was erected and tied into the structure.
By using predominantly the same core
construction team for Eldon Square as that which has worked with
the client at Gateshead’s MetroCentre since 2001, we have
maintained an excellent working relationship.
“Without exception, each of these projects has been delivered on time and to the quality standards we have come to expect from you. All the schemes have had their own unique challenges but common to all is that they have been undertaken within a live shopping centre with the minimum of disruption. One thing stands out above all others as to why these projects have been so successful and that is the consistency of your management team who have remained committed, enthusiastic and passionate about delivering the best results.” Kay Chaldecott, Capital Shopping Centres Managing Director
The St Andrew’s Way extension to Eldon Square was honoured with a Gold award from the British Council of Shopping Centres. The scheme won praise from the judges for delivering a series of flagship stores within a development which complements and enhances its surroundings and improves linkages through the city.
