General Information

Aberdeen’s Marischal College will be converted to provide the City Council with a 21st century corporate headquarters.

The Grade A listed college’s interior will be reconfigured to create 18,500m2 of work space across six floors of predominantly open plan offices.

The college is the second largest granite building in the world and one of the most striking landmarks in the city. Its renowned Marshall Mackenzie frontage was completed in 1906 in the heyday of Aberdeen’s granite industry.

By lowering the existing basement, minimising floor depths and introducing castellated beams to carry services, an additional level has been introduced into the building without increasing its height above ground or affecting the look of the original structure.

The site team worked with our Design Group to develop the extensive shoring and underpinning system required to lower the basement, and on a system for underpinning the six octagonal granite columns which support The Pend, the main entrance archway.
