Wembley Stadium was completed in just 12 months ready for the 1923 FA Cup Final.
General Information
Built on top of Wembley Hill in London, Wembley Stadium was part of a contract that included the buildings that housed the British Empire Exhibition of 1924.
Designed to accommodate 125,000 spectators, the stadium, including the famous Wembley lions, was built entirely in concrete. Around 3,000 men worked on its construction.

To allow concrete construction at height, a 49m temporary steel tower was built on site. Concrete was hoisted up in skips and then funnelled into place using a 122m chute. This also allowed a long sweep of wall to be built without moving plant.
The surface of the stadium’s concrete walls was scored with horizontal grooves. This concealed any marks left by the shutter boards and gave the stadium the appearance of being built out of huge masonry blocks.
