One of Scotland’s finest buildings, Aberdeen’s iconic Marischal College has been restored to its former glory.
Marischal College has been converted to provide a 21st century corporate headquarters for Aberdeen City Council.
The Grade A listed college’s interior was reconfigured to create 18,500m2 of work space across six floors of predominantly open plan offices.
The college is the second largest granite building in the world and one of the most striking landmarks in the city. Its renowned Marshall Mackenzie frontage was completed in 1906 in the heyday of Aberdeen’s granite industry.
The site team worked with our Design Group to develop the extensive shoring and underpinning system required to lower the basement so that an extra floor level could be added. A system for underpinning the six octagonal granite columns which support the main entrance archway was also devised.
Following a condition assessment and calculation of the future lifespan of the building’s existing embedded steelwork, we were able to circumvent the need to introduce a cathodic protection system.
The amount of masonry which had to be dismantled was also reduced following investigative works and specialist assessment.
90% of the more than 4,200 tonnes of waste created during the internal demolition works was reused or recycled.
