The technology centre will be used to develop the next generation of offshore wind turbine blades.
This 28,000m2 research and development centre provides facilities for the design, manufacture and testing of prototypes of the world’s largest wind turbine blades.
Two 174m long and 56m wide halls provide the space required to develop and test blades up to 100m long. A glazed atrium with ETFE roof links the halls to a three-storey office block capable of accommodating 150 engineers and technicians.
With the client developing its blade testing technology throughout construction, a number of additional requirements were incorporated into the base build within programme and budget.
Major enabling works included reconstruction of a river quay wall behind the existing structure, an operation which resulted in the creation of additional mudflats.
Landscaped zones were formed around the facility and lakes created to manage rainwater discharge.
Measures to reduce the development’s environmental impact included the use of lime stabilisation for the piling mat, which avoided the need for large imports of hardcore, incorporation of a Ground Source Heat Recovery system, and the crushing of 20,000m3 of concrete for reuse on site.
