The concession included widening 7km of dual carriageway to three lanes on each side of the Tees Viaduct in Middlesbrough.
Work on this Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) contract for a 120km section of the A19 from Dishforth to the Tyne Tunnel included carriageway widening, bridge reconstruction and diversion of the Old River Tees.
Throughout the 30-year concession period we will operate and maintain the network of strategic roads. This involves carriageway reconstruction, carriageway resurfacing, bridge strengthening, emergency attendance and winter maintenance.
Value engineering and innovative solutions have been a feature of the concession. The use of trenchless drainage repair techniques, for example, avoids the need for lane closure, reducing disruption.
We operate a fleet of gritters to keep the roads clear of ice and snow for drivers. Information from strategically located roadside weather stations is used in conjunction with Met Office forecasts to decide the most appropriate salting treatment and when the gritters should be dispatched.
All the route’s carriageway lighting, traffic lights, illuminated signs, traffic counters and ice detectors are powered by low carbon energy - generated by the more energy efficient Combined Heat and Power Stations.
A landscape management plan reflected environmental issues discovered as work progressed. We located two areas where orchids grow on interchange embankments and took measures to protect these unusual plants. We also worked with Billingham Countryside Park to preserve and enhance an existing damsel fly habitat.
During diversion of the Old River Tees channel, environmentally sensitive areas of Salt Marsh were discovered. This required the careful removal and storage of material and its reinstatement upon completion.
To promote open dialogue, co-operation and a common approach, our team entered into a Partnering Charter with all those involved in the project. This has continued to be effective into the maintenance period and has led to excellent relationships with our client and long-lasting relationships with our supply chain.
Our team has recorded three years, or the equivalent of more than one million man hours, without a RIDDOR reportable accident.
