Completed more than two months early, SouthGate has transformed the southern gateway to one of the UK’s finest cities.
General Information
Covering nine acres, SouthGate Bath is a modern shopping destination in the southern quarter of this famous spa city.
Six Georgian-style buildings provide 37,600m2 of retail space, including a new department store, along with 5,000m2 of leisure and restaurant facilities and 99 new homes. The development also includes an 860-space basement car park.
Wide Pennant stone pavements and a number of public spaces integrate the scheme with the surrounding streetscape.

Our Design Group developed a temporary works solution which provided the largest possible unobstructed area for the 130,000m3 excavation to make way for the three-storey underground car park.
Precast concrete panels clad in Bath stone provided a cost-effective and fast-track method of constructing the development’s complex articulated façades. Just-in-time deliveries of the 8m-span panels minimised disruption to traffic and avoided congestion on site, allowing installation to proceed quickly and efficiently.
All arisings from the demolition of the multi-storey car park and concrete slab of the original development were crushed and reused on site.
SouthGate Bath was honoured with a Gold award from the British Council of Shopping Centres. The judges said they were impressed by the way the team rose to the challenge of delivering “a major, well-integrated scheme in the heart of a World Heritage site”.
The development received a Commendation in the 2010 Concrete Society Awards.
