Constructed within the heart of the university’s West Campus, Sport Central provides 11,000m2 of state-of-the-art fitness and training facilities over three storeys.
In addition to three main sports halls, the facility houses squash courts, a training hall, a 25m swimming pool, a 150-machine fitness suite and a 12m high climbing wall. The centre also incorporates laboratories and a performance and analysis suite for use by psychology and sports science students.
Due to the site’s very restricted access, the main 42m trusses for the sports hall were delivered in sections for site assembly and erected by twin cranes.
The building’s bronze anodised aluminium screens offered a major fabrication challenge and include some 148,848 perforations across more than 1,600 panels.
The wall in the centre’s main three-court sports hall were finished to close tolerances in birch veneer ply by our own joiners.
Sport Central is rated as BREEAM ‘excellent’.
A combined heat and power plant generates electricity for the centre and exports power to the adjacent Students Union. Heat from the unit also provides hot water for the pool.
A 125,000 litre harvesting tank collects rainwater which is used to flush the toilets, while all lights are digitally controlled to maximise efficiency.
The successful completion of the centre builds on our strong relationship with Northumbria University and follows delivery of its City Campus East development.
With many of the site team having worked on the previous scheme, the project benefitted from the continuity of experience and strong relationships they brought to the project.
Sport Central won the Community Benefit award and was named Project of the Year at the RICS North East Renaissance Awards. The facility was also Highly Commended in the Sustainability category.
